The Song of Achilles is a beautiful, beautiful book. Narrated by Patroclus, this book is a retelling of the epic Trojan War. Patroclus is young when he is exiled to the court of King Peleus and his son Achilles. Patroclus and Achilles soon become friends and thence the song of Achilles begins. A word comes from Sparta that Helen, queen of Sparta, has been kidnapped. And the Trojan war begins. Patroclus travels with Achilles to Troy, and this war will demand everything Patroclus has to offer. This book is a war between peace and honor, gods and kings. It is a triumph of love over name and fame.

Although the book’s name is The Song of Achilles, I think Patroclus is the real hero in this retelling. A lot of twists are introduced in the form of prophecies from the start of the book itself, but they are explored in the second part. Therefore, I felt a great deal of excitement reading the events unfold. I don’t think I can do any justice describing Miller’s writing. For what it’s worth, the writing is poetic and poignant, I flowed with it. One can not help but fall in love with the world created by Miller’s words.

The pace of the book is apt, the writing is poetic, the story is profound, and the main characters are worth rooting for. This book deserves all the love! I definitely recommend The Song of Achilles to Greek mythology fans, to romance fans, and to character study fans.
